The BWF World Training Centre Saarbrucken was established in March 2005 and is classified as a badminton “Performance Centre”.

This elite Performance Centre is for talented badminton players from less developed and developing badminton nations. The athletes main aim is to qualify for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The Saarbrucken Training Center focuses on one group of athletes in a long term elite development program towards a specific performance goal.  The Saarbrucken Training Center is an approved Training Centre of the IOC Olympic Solidarity.



The Facility

The Hermann-Neuberger Sportschule in Saarbrucken is a state of the art elite training facility and is one of 20 Olympic Training Centres in Germany. The facility offers full badminton training facilities, strength / conditioning gymnasium, testing services, sports science / medicine servicing and 4 Star standard accommodation together with top class dining / catering for elite athletes.

The Athletes

The Road to Beijing Program commenced in June 2006 in Saarbrucken and has 17 players (8 male, 9 female) from 16 nations / four continents. Players are from such diverse places at Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, Guatemala, Ukraine, Lithuania, Peru, Canada, Vietnam, the Czech Republic, Estonia, the USA and Belgium. Athletes at the center have a 2.5 year visa to stay in Germany for training with a permanent address at the Hermann-Neuberger Sportschule.

The goal for the BWF and the sport is to have 50 nations represented in badminton at the Beijing Olympic Games – up from the 32 nations in Badminton in Athens 2004.

The Coaches / Staff

Three coaches are responsible for the individualized training and competition programs for the athletes. Gunther Huber is the Director of the Centre with overall responsibility for the day to day operations of this Badminton World Training Centre.
